Amanda Becker is an American author and journalist who writes about politics and policy, focusing on gender and power. She is best known for her book You Must Stand Up (2024), which examines abortion rights in the United States after the Supreme Court's Dobbs decision.
Amanda Becker studied journalism and political science before beginning her career covering Congress. She worked at CQ Roll Call and Reuters, covering legislative affairs, the White House, and elections. Over the past decade, her work has appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, and Glamour magazine. Her political reporting has also been featured on National Public Radio.
In 2023, Becker was selected as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University. That same year, she became the Washington correspondent for The 19th, a nonprofit newsroom covering gender, politics and policy.
Her first book, You Must Stand Up (2024), documents the response to the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. The book follows healthcare providers, legal experts, and activists who work to maintain access to abortion in the United States. It describes changes in state laws, legal battles, and grassroots efforts to protect reproductive rights.
Becker writes: "The end of Roe was not the end of the fight — it was the beginning of a new movement.
You Must Stand Up has been praised for its in-depth reporting and analysis. Author Jessica Valenti called it "a necessary book for anyone who cares about the assault on our bodies. Legal scholar Melissa Murray called it "meticulously researched and compulsively readable.
Amanda Becker lives in Washington, D.C.
