In the post-war years, America developed a new economic base with a new and ever-increasing standard of living, which, coupled with the baby boom, created suburbia. Originally not much different than similar situation comedies of the period, Father Knows Best rose above norm by removing most of the clichés before it went on air, and thanks to excellent writing and the outstanding acting talents of the principals, Robert Young (who played Jim Anderson and co-created the series with and writer Ed James), June Whitley (his wife Margaret), and Rhoda Williams, Ted Donaldson and Norma Jean Nilsson (their three children, Betty, Bud, and Kathy).
