A trusted physician. Two dead brothers. A fortune shadowed by suspicion.
In early nineteenth-century France, young doctor Edme Castaing struggles with financial pressures until his friendship with the wealthy Ballet brothers brings an extraordinary change in his circumstances. But behind his sudden prosperity lies a disturbing trail of disputed wills, secret dealings, and suspected poisoning.
In this gripping historical true-crime account, H. B. Irving follows the evidence that brought Castaing into the courtroom. Contradictory explanations and uncertain medical findings complicate a case in which money supplies a powerful motive—but proving murder demands more than suspicion. As the proceedings unfold, Irving examines the uneasy relationship between trust, ambition, and criminal responsibility.
Drawn from A Book of Remarkable Criminals and narrated by Greg Cooper, Dr. Castaing offers a compact exploration of betrayal and the challenges of uncovering a concealed crime. An absorbing listen for anyone drawn to historical murder cases, criminal biography, and courtroom drama.
