Across the golden flax fields of a secluded Montana estate, journalist Elena Marquez arrives with a deadline and a plan. She’s there to profile Rowan Caldwell, the private force behind a flax-powered wellness empire. He’s controlled, distant, and careful about every answer. His walls rise as high as the aspens ringing the property. Elena is twenty-eight and intent on proving herself. Closed doors only sharpen her focus.

Their interviews begin as verbal chess, paced between swaying stems and long walks on gravel paths. Curiosity shifts. Attention lingers. The pull grows complicated by a sixteen-year age gap and the quiet imbalance between subject and reporter. Rowan’s restraint thins under Elena’s steady questions. She notices the pauses, the guarded silences, the cracks beneath his composure.

As the days go on, probing turns personal. Old grief surfaces. Buried betrayals slip into daylight. The exchange moves from talk to touch, from distance to something closer than either expected. Every confession tightens the bond and the risk. When the last truth emerges, the trust they’ve built wavers.

Will Rowan loosen the control that’s kept him safe, or lose the one person who truly sees him?

This story is part of the Sustained series, where desire is cultivated slowly and felt deeply.

Sustained is a steamy contemporary romance series about hunger that isn’t just physical. Each story follows desire shaped by habit, restraint, and the quiet closeness of daily life. These romances grow in kitchens, retreats, workplaces, and wide-open spaces where attraction builds through proximity, tension, and what goes unsaid.

Heat comes slow and intentional. Emotions stay grounded. Connections last. You’ll find steam fogging a kitchen window, the soft clink of plates after midnight, a shared silence that means more than words. Nourishment becomes a language. Patience carries weight. Longing is allowed its time.

In Sustained, love isn’t devoured all at once. It’s watched. Fed. Kept alive until it won’t stay quiet anymore.

Desire doesn’t rush here it waits, and then it stays.
