Deborah Lott

Deborah A. Lott is a writer, editor, and college instructor specializing in creative nonfiction. Several of her essays have been recognized in "Best American Essays" and nominated for Pushcart Prizes.

Deborah A. Lott holds a BA in English Literature from UCLA, where she graduated summa cum laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Lott also holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University, Los Angeles.

Lott's early career involved a blend of publishing and activism. Having worked in publishing in Boston, she joined Peace Press in Los Angeles, a group promoting social justice and environmental protection.

Her work at Peace Press and as a contributing editor to Psychiatric Times reflects her diverse interests, from Zen practices to her day with Black Panther Huey Newton.

Her first book, In Session: The Bond Between Women and Their Therapists (1999), explores the dynamics of psychotherapy, drawing from extensive interviews with clients and therapists. A significant work on psychotherapy relationships, this book is used nationally for training psychotherapists.

She details her life with a neurotic father and an emotionally distant mother in her second book, Don't Go Crazy Without Me (2020). It recounts her journey from a childhood shaped by her father's worldview to her own struggle for sanity and identity. There are themes like mental illness, family dynamics, and personal growth. The book has garnered praise from notable authors like Mark Doty and Abigail Thomas.

As a faculty member at Antioch University, Los Angeles, Lott teaches creative writing and literature. She is known for her innovative courses like The Trauma Memoir and Lolita and Her Literary Sisters. Lott emphasizes critical thinking and encourages her students to question conventional wisdom and explore multiple perspectives.

In addition to her teaching, Deborah A. Lott serves as Editor for Two Hawks Quarterly and is an accomplished independent editor, working with various authors on various publications.
