“The Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri was first published in 2003. She had originally written it as a novella and it was published in The New Yorker. However, after some time of its publication, she expanded the story and wrote a full length novel.
The story is based on the people who are caught in two conflicting cultures where they find highly noticeable religious, social, and ideological differences. The novel very skillfully explores emotional and cultural themes.
At the centre of the story are the first generation Indian immigrants in the United States. The story illustrates the issues which they and their children had to face there in a new country.
