This comparative and interdisciplinary approach to catastrophes in the Dominican Republic, Central America, Mexico City, and Brazil shows how natural disasters are used to rewrite and reconstruct the nation, with multiple narratives competing for control over the interpretation of the event--negotiating meaning, blame, and legitimacy--and leading to cultural and political change.
